Looking back to find love? Prime Video’s dating series, The One That Got Away, matches a group of six competitors searching for romance with missed connections from their past.

The reality series, which dropped on the streaming platform in June 2022, followed six singles who are looking for love. While they hoped to eventually find The One during their tenure on the dating experiment, host Betty Who revealed in the first episode that all of their suitors would be familiar faces. The show’s stars connected with former friends, unrequited high school crushes and even one-time flames after they arrived at the retreat through a “portal.”

“I walked away from the season feeling very optimistic about the ways that people can change and show up for you,” the “Somebody Loves You” songstress told The List ahead of the series premiere. “That’s something that’s really exciting to me, and probably the piece of advice I would give is that people can really change. You got to give people a chance to show you who they are now, and that’s a really special part, and we’re going to see a lot of that in this season of The One That Got Away.”

She added: “I will say there is a soft spot that I felt for [contestant] Jeff [Perla] and his story line of finding himself. I don’t want to give spoilers away, but there are a couple moments that I was really rooting for Jeff, and I was watching him behind the scenes [and saying to him], ‘You got this, babe.’ If there was one contestant who I felt like I had a close eye on, it might have been Jeff.”

Throughout the show, travel blogger Jeff struggled to open up to his potential matches, including his former confirmation classmate Anthony, his coworker Micah and his longtime friend Alex Van Gurp.

“I found the people who [come] through [the portal] bring you back to who you were back then … and when I saw him come through it kind of gave me [this] wave of, ‘OMG, that’s what I used to feel like,’” Jeff admitted during the first episode. “It was really interesting trying to navigate each individual person and relationship, and how they came into your life to begin with.”

Elsewhere on the show, viewers met model Allyssa Anderson, who was ready to settle down and get married.

“I’m a huge believer in spirituality. I think that in a lot of ways this was just serendipity,” she gushed to the camera. “I felt when I was presented with this show it was a stroke of fate, and I really had to take that leap and not look back.”

Despite attempting to pursue connections with her former high school crush, her school bus buddy and an Instagram admirer, it was family friend Adam Drexler who won her heart.

“This is a promise to you that no matter what happens and no matter where life takes us, I’m always going to support you and I’m always going to be there for you,” Adam gushed during the finale, presenting her with a promise ring as they exited through the portal together.

Ashley Algarin and Quinn Wentzel
The X-ray technician was shocked when her ex-boyfriend walked through the portal — and immediately proclaimed he still loved her. Despite hesitations about his readiness to take the next step, the pair left the show together early after Ashley invited Quinn to move into her new house. While the couple have yet to publicly address how their relationship ended after the show, the model announced in April 2022 that she was expecting her first child, a baby girl, that August. Ashley did not confirm the baby’s paternity at the time. Prime Video
Nigel Sydnor and Desiree ‘Dezi’
While Nigel had several strong connections throughout season 1, he ended up pursuing his romance with Dezi, whom he frequently works with, and they left through the portal together. The real estate agent has also remained mum about where their relationship stands since leaving the show. Lisa Rose/Prime Video (2)
Vince Xu and Yurika Yoneda
Vince proposed to Yurika, a former high school friend who went to prom with his group of pals, during the series finale after she won over his faithful pup, Leo.  While Vince and Yurika have remained coy about their season 1 engagement, Vince offered a sweet tribute to his former high school classmate — and his other contenders — via Instagram in June 2022. “I would be remiss if I didn’t show my absolute gratitude to the incredible women that took a leap of faith and opened themselves to the possibility of finding a reconnection with me,” he wrote. “They truly are the reason why 'the bar' was set so high for everyone coming through the portal and I’m so thankful to have been given the privilege to date such beautiful, intelligent, sweet, and kind-hearted women 🙏.” Yurika replied: “So grateful that we reconnected & thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey on the show!” Despite leaving the show together, the pair announced in July 2022 that they called off their whirlwind engagement. “The transition from the show to real life was difficult and we struggled with navigating the distance between us and quickly faced the sobering reality of trying to meet each others’ expectations for the relationship. It’s safe to say, this wasn’t a normal relationship whatsoever,” they wrote in a joint Instagram statement. “But more so, we simply weren’t ready to tackle these obstacles, since after all, we didn’t have enough time to establish a solid foundation.” They added: “We took some time and space away from each other to focus on ourselves and our own lives. Maybe we’ll talk more in detail about this another time; but as much as we both wanted that fairy tale ending, we decided to go our separate ways.” Lisa Rose/Prime Video (2)
Jeff Perla and Alex Van Gurp
After being “besties with benefits” for several years, Jeff ended up asking Alex to officially be his boyfriend during the season 1 finale. While the pair have yet to confirm their dating status since the show wrapped, they continue to pop up on one another’s social media profiles. Lisa Rose/Prime Video (2)
Allyssa Anderson and Adam Drexler
Allyssa eagerly accepted a diamond promise ring from her beau during the finale as they left to start their next chapter together. The duo have also remained mum about where they stand, but Allyssa gushed about her experience after the show premiered. She wrote via Instagram: “#theonethatgotaway was a mind-opening, heartwarming experience. I made new friends, reconnected with old ones, and ultimately became a changed person on the other side. Never settle for less than the love you deserve… your fairytale ending could be just a portal opening away💫💕.” Lisa Rose/Prime Video (2)
Kasey Ma and Simon Fung
Though Simon arrived at the experiment late, Kasey felt a connection with her former collegiate classmate and hoped to see where things could go in the future. While the pair haven’t made their relationship Instagram official, Simon did give Kasey photo credit on a June 2022 snap taken in NYC, seemingly indicating they remained on good terms. The twosome eventually went their separate ways after leaving the portal together. "I am still single, have dated around for a bit, but have been slowing down recently. I am mainly focusing on myself and becoming stronger and more independent each and every day," Kasey wrote via Instagram in July 2022, noting she has since relocated to Los Angeles as Simon moved to New York City. "If a man wants to grace me with his presence and be a wonderful addition to my life, I will welcome him with open arms. But gone are the days where I believe I need a man to complete my life."
