What’s next? The Byrde family left a lot of things unresolved at the end of Ozark season 3 — and there will be so much left to learn when the show returns.

The Emmy-nominated series debuted on Netflix in July 2017 and quickly became a hit with viewers. The complex and intense story of Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy Byrde (Laura Linney) laundering money with their two children, Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner), captivated audiences throughout its first three seasons.

Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner), Darlene Snell (Lisa Emery), Wyatt Langmore (Charlie Tahan) and Ben Davis (Tom Pelphrey) all become major players as the Byrdes relocate to the Ozarks in the Midwest and dive deeper into the laundering business.

As the family’s involvement with the Mexican drug cartel — and its leader Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) — gets even more twisted, they must continue to avoid death and jail time as they run their operation.

“When I got the script and read the script, you could see the potential not only for the character of Wendy, but for the narrative, as well. It just had tremendous potential. That was obvious, right off the bat,” Linney told Collider in July 2017 of her choice to join the cast. “I wasn’t looking to do a series, but I’ve always really, really admired Jason. I’d met him a few times, socially, and I’d always really liked him. I’d always suspected and inherently known that he had a much larger range than he’s been able to explore, so I was just very excited for him, that he was going to let himself venture into another genre.”

The Big C alum noted that the whole company and production team was “wonderful” right out the gate. “I really feel like I fell into a pot of honey. It was really fun,” she added.

In June 2020, Netflix announced that the hit drama would be coming back for a fourth and final season. More than a year later, the streaming service revealed the first official trailer.

In the November 2021 teaser, Marty and Wendy appear to reflect on how they got swept up in their scheme of working with the cartel and laundering its money, all while noting that every action has a consequence.

Where Did Season 3 Leave Off?
The Byrde family left things in a tense place after Marty and Wendy fully embedded themselves into the cartel life following Ben’s death. Season 3 also resulted in Ruth splitting from the group, leaving fans to wonder if she will ever forgive Marty and Wendy after losing Ben. Plus, the couple’s choice to get close to Navarro made their motivations even murkier. Netflix
Who Is Returning?
Bateman, Linney, Garner, Hublitz, Gaertner, Tahan, Emery and Kevin L. Johnson (Sam Dermody) are all set to return for the final season. Solis and Damian Young, who played recurring characters Omar Navarro and Jim Rettelsdorf, respectively, in season 3 have been upgraded to series regulars, according to Deadline. STEVE DIETL/NETFLIX
Are There New Characters?
Alfonso Hererra has been added to the season 4 cast as Navarro family member Javi Elizonndro, Deadline reported in November 2020. Adam Rothenberg will also be joining the series as Mel Sattem, a cop who now works as a private investigator after falling from grace within the department. Bruno Bichir (as Navarro’s priest), CC Castillo (as Sheriff Leigh Guerrero) and Katrina Lenk (as a leading biopharmaceutical company CEO named Clare Shaw) have been tapped for recurring roles. Veronica Falcón and Ali Stroker signed on for season 4 in June 2021, per The Hollywood Reporter. Falcón will portray Omar Navarro’s sister Camila, whose son Javi is trying to take over his uncle’s cartel. Stroker, for her part, will play an old friend of Ruth’s mother named Charles-Ann. First Look
Bateman revealed a sneak peek of the first part of season 4 during Netflix’s TUDUM festival in September 2021. The brief clip showed Marty and Wendy cleaning blood off their clothes, hair and face while a party appeared to be going on at Navarro’s mansion. The teaser ended with the couple hearing a noise in their room and turning their heads toward the sound before the screen went black. Netflix
When Will It Air?
Season 4 will be released in two parts, each made up of seven episodes. Netflix announced in October 2021 that the first half will drop on January 21, 2022. Part 2 will air later that year. Netflix
Accidents Happen
“Human beings make decisions, they commit acts and that makes things happen,” Bateman says in a voice over in the November 2021 trailer for season 4. “It creates a snowball effect. It causes other people to make decisions. The cycle continues. The snowball keeps rolling.” As scenes of a car crash play in reverse alongside glimpses of Marty and Wendy’s choices over the previous three seasons, the actor adds, "No, sometimes people make decisions and we gotta act accordingly or you can crawl in a hole to die.” Throughout the teaser, someone gets shot — which is how blood ends up on Marty and Wendy’s faces and clothes — fires errupt, more accidents occur and Ruth looks at Ben’s body in the morgue. “No ending is reach by accident,” the final title card reads as the Byrde family happily drives together in a car.
